When Fe West was in the hospital in August 2007, she had no insurance, no way of accessing affordable health care, few people to turn to and her green card was not in order. What she did have was a newborn daughter, Sofia, and a lot of questions.
Thankfully, West was able to get help when a nurse at Holy Cross Hospital introduced her to First Steps, a local program designed to help firsttime parents learn and meet the needs of their new family as a whole. “I had absolutely nothing,” West said. “The first thing I learned was that if you take antibiotics with birth control, you’ll most likely get pregnant.”
